Why this place is special

From John Ollila regarding his mother: " I have given the land in her honor because she grew up on the site, knew every square foot of it, loved being outdoors, and passed these ethics on to her children. "

The Sally M. Ollila Memorial Woodland was donated to the KLT by John Ollila as part of the Pilgrim River Watershed Project. The Woodland is named after his mother who would often take them to swim while she could relax by the streambank as she loved to be outside. The property contains mixed forests and significant old-growth character, riparian corridor and scenic views of the Pilgrim River, and has been left undisturbed for several decades.  This property provides contiguity with Forest Legacy tracts that extend the riparian corridor of the main Pilgrim River channel within the Pilgrim watershed Project.  This parcel also adjoins a 10-acre nature area owned by the Houghton Keweenaw Conservation District (HKCD), a PRWP partner, and this will make for compatible and joint management of these combined nature areas for public access and low-impact use.
