It was Terry who first gathered friends at his home in discussions that broadened and led to the formation of the Keweenaw Land Trust.
Terry was a true founder as a signatory, along with Michelle Morgan and Dana Richter, on the papers of incorporation for the organization, and so much more: a physician, mentor and friend to many. Terry and his wife Sue Ellen were among the early landowners to create a land legacy by protecting much of their land at Churning Rapids through the Keweenaw Land Trust.
Many of you likely enjoyed the HorseTail Scrambles that Terry and Sue Ellen hosted at Churning Rapids for a couple of decades that gathered community on the 4th of July for a trail walk or run, a huge potluck, yard games, music and camaraderie. You may not know that proceeds from this event fueled the KLT Land Stewardship Fund, the earnings of which now help support the care of the growing number of KLT protected lands that so many now enjoy.
Terry was very mindful of sustaining this organization he helped create. He was instrumental in establishing an endowment fund at the Keweenaw Community Foundation dedicated to financial support of the Keweenaw Land Trust. Terry also initiated the Floyd and Martha Kinzel Heart and Hands Award, in memory of his parents, that each year honored a local individual for community service to peace, justice or the environment with a donation to a charity of their choice.
In a recent interview reflecting on KLT in its 30th year, Terry stated his desire for KLT to continue to protect land:
“Whenever there is a chance, if we can preserve it without putting the organization at risk, we should”.
The founders and early members take great pride in all that KLT has done and become so far and share Terry’s desire that others will carry the organization forward. We are grateful for Terry and his many contributions to our community, his wonderful smile a reflection of the sparks he lit in others along the way.
In this fall season of color and change, let’s take time to read a good book, take a hike in the woods, enjoy a meal with friends, and reflect on the colorful and meaningful life Terry lived.
Together, let’s commit to carry on Terry's passion and advocacy for a community in which all, wildlife and humans together, can thrive.
Memorial gifts received in honor of Terry will grow the KLT Forever Fund, recently established by the board of directors to support the annual operating budget and help sustain the organization.
