Second Saturday JUNE!

Day: June 13th
Time: 10 am to 1PM
Location: KLT's Pilgrim Community Forest

At the corner of Paradise and Pilgrim Road. Look for the trailhead at the start of the guardrail, we will put out an event sign. Parking is along both roads, carpool if possible, there is not a lot of great parking.

Many who have lived or traveled in Lower MI or WI have seen the effects of entire understories getting taken over by buckthorn. We are starting to see that in some of our natural areas in the Keweenaw and so with the help of a private donation, we are able launch a series of workday efforts to keep it in check this summer and maintain the natural diverisity that makes forests in the Keweenaw  special.

The first of these workdays will be at our Pilgrim River Community Forest. There are 2 locations of serious infestation, one a mile down the trail and the other two and a half miles down the trail at the river.

On this work day we will be employing a high cut method to keep the buckthorn from setting more fruit this summer and then we will treat it again this fall. We will also be planting red osier dogwood whips and other plants in areas we treated last year to restore some understory function to areas that were badly affected. We are partnering with KISMA to help us manage buckthorn at this and other KLT and partner organizations throughout the summer!
