Maria Janowiak came to the Keweenaw for college and liked it so much that she's never left. Maria's professional background is in forest management, and she works for the Northern Institute of Applied Climate Science and US Forest Service. Outside of work, Maria and her husband also own and steward 30 acres of woods and wetland in central Houghton County, and she spends much of her time working on the property and in her garden. Maria serves on the Community Engagement and Lands committees for the Keweenaw Land Trust.
Maria is also a MSU Extension Master Gardener. As part of the Master Gardener Program, participants must put in so many hours towards a public education project. If you are interested in native plant gardening please check out Maria's: GARDENING WITH NATIVE PLANTS: A GUIDE FOR MICHIGAN'S UPPER PENINSULA. She has packed it with a lot of localized useful information!
