Oct. 2008 - Manitou Island Light Station Preserve
2008 Work Season Finalized
The 2008 work season for the Manitou Island Light Station Preserve came to an end yesterday (October 7, 2008) when the work crew returned from the island after completing the final outing of the season.

The work season started in May and was followed by six monthly excursions to the island, typically lasting four days each. Major accomplishments for the season include; removal of vinyl flooring throughout the entire house exposing rich maple floors, removed and replaced damaged drywall with new drywall, constructed an primed and painted security panels for the light keepers residence and the fog signal building, replaced missing roof shingles around the chimney of the residence, replaced missing exterior boards from the base of the walkway leading from the house to the light tower, removed all surface conduit from the house (solving an ongoing condensation problem), repaired a large hole in the foundation under the kitchen, and gutted the original light keepers kitchen which had sustained years of water damage from a leaky roof. The fog signal building was cleaned and organized to enable storage of materials coming out of the light keepers residence. And, last but not least, a large amount of heavy, cumbersome materials were delivered to the island to enable projects for the coming 2009 work season; scaffolding, cement, mortar, powered wheelbarrow, etc.

All of the success on Manitou this work season is entirely attributed to the dedication, hard work, flexible schedules, and boundless energy of the volunteers who worked diligently to complete Manitou's 2008 work goals.

2008 Manitou Island Light Station volunteers: Joe Kaplan, Chris Williams, Evan McDonald, Mark Hovel, Jeremiah Mason, Matt Liesch, Peter Annin, Joe Bergan, Lyle Grivicish, Eva Newman, Roger Welsh, Mike Dolan, Keren Tischler, Allison Slavich, and Max Henschell.
