Accreditation Update: Your Input is Needed!

For those of you following along, KLT's long standing goal to achieve national Accreditation may be near. The process is based on the organization's adherence to the Land Trust Alliance Standards and Practices Ė the requirements for running an ethical and effective land trust that KLT adopted many years ago. The independent Accreditation Commission will scrutinize our policies and documentation, interview staff and board members, and take public input to determine if the organization has been effectively following those requirements or point out deficiencies to address. A public comment period for the Keweenaw Land Trustís application is now open.

The Commission invites public input and accepts signed, written comments on pending applications. Comments must relate to how the Keweenaw Land Trust complies with national quality standards. These standards address the ethical and technical operation of a land trust. For the full list of standards, visit

To the outside world, achieving Accreditation is independent verification that KLT is doing good work, a stamp of approval that reassures KLT supporters and helps to attract new ones. Building a robust organization, instilling confidence and peace of mind, and demonstrating professionalism and competence: those reasons to pursue Accreditation are important and meaningful in their own right. KLT's efforts to attain Accreditation, putting the pieces together and getting internal systems in order, is helping the organization operate more effectively and be a more sustainable organization.
